How do I look natural on camera?

To look natural on camera, talk to a person rather than to the lens, answer in full sentences, wear something that feels like you, and let the crew handle the technical side. Nerves are normal and the edit removes mistakes. At IAVA Productions in Toronto we coach everyone on camera, and our studio's controlled light, makeup station and waiting area help people settle in.

What helps most?

  1. Talk to the interviewer or your co-host, not the camera. A real conversation looks real.
  2. Answer in full sentences that restate the question, for example "The biggest change was...".
  3. Keep going after a mistake. Anything that goes wrong can be cut.
  4. Take a breath before each answer and speak slightly slower than normal.
  5. Use your own words. Notes with three or four points are better than a memorized script.

What should you wear?

Pick solid colours that suit the set and feel like you. Avoid very fine patterns that look busy on camera, and check that what you wear is comfortable when you sit.

How does the set help?

Fully controlled light means you are not squinting or reacting to the room. A makeup station and a waiting area give you time to settle in before filming.

Examples from our work

  • Between 2 Brunettes. The hosts had the chemistry and ideas but no production experience. In a studio built around their show, they sat down and focused on the conversation.

How IAVA Productions does it

We build the day so you are not performing. We use open questions, one idea at a time, and we coach you to answer in full sentences. Our crew handles light, sound and cameras, and you only need to talk.

If you are nervous, tell us before the shoot and we will plan the day around you.

Frequently asked questions

What if I freeze?
We pause, reset and ask the question again. Nothing is lost.
Do I need a teleprompter?
Most interviews do not need one. We can discuss a scripted format for a brand film or VSL.
Is there makeup?
IAVA Studio has a makeup station, and we can coordinate makeup and styling.
Can I do more than one take?
Yes. If an answer did not feel right, say so and we will go again.
