What is the difference between a videographer and a video production company?

A videographer films, and often edits, one person at a time. A video production company covers the whole project: planning, scripting or structure, filming with a crew, editing, delivery and revisions, usually with a studio and equipment of its own. IAVA Productions in Toronto is a production company with its own studio in Kensington Market, and we also take bookings for filming only, so you can hire the team for a single shoot day.

When is a videographer enough?

If you already know what you need to film, have someone to edit it, and the shoot is simple, a videographer can be the right fit. Examples are an event recording, a headshot-style interview or raw footage for an in-house team.

When do you need a production company?

  • The video has a business goal, such as winning clients or explaining what you do, and needs a plan behind it.
  • You want a polished result with several cameras, controlled light and clean sound.
  • You need a series, a campaign or a show, not a single clip.
  • You want one team to be responsible from the first call to the final file.

Can you hire a production company just to film?

Yes. At IAVA Productions you can book a half-day or full-day filming session, in our studio or on location, and take the footage away. You can also add editing when you want finished videos.
